The Queens Qustodian isn’t about whining. He’s about doing. Jeff Orlick aka Jeffrey Taste aka the Queens Qustodian is on a one man mission to clean-up Jackson Heights and unite the neighborhood. His target? Those illegal junk signs that never get taken down.
Jeff Orlick moved to Jackson Heights, Queen’s six years ago. At first, he said he was intimidated by the non-stop action he found there. Now, he’s arguably one of the most of visible and involved residents of his block.
Jeff started developing food tours four years ago, taking curious foodies through Jackson Height’s eclectic smorgasbord of culinary delights. He makes pit stops at Himalayan food carts and takes visitors behind the scene (and in to the kitchen) of Tibetan, Ecuadorian and Colombian restaurants on Queen’s bustling Roosevelt Avenue.
Jeff said the food tours gave him access to the Jackson Height’s vibrant community. After that, he said, a whole new world opened up to him. It’s how he made friends and became involved in greening and bettering one of New York City’s most diverse neighborhoods.
His interest in Queens’ goes way beyond food. He wants his neighborhood to feel like a community. That’s why three-years ago Jeff donned a blue workman suit and started patrolling the streets of Jackson Heights with a can-do attitude and a box cutter.
No public nuisance is spared Jeff’s scouring attention. He cuts down illegal street signs. Disposes of old, unused newspaper boxes, uses a carjack to take down rusting bike frames and slaps ‘you parked like an asshole’ stickers on cars blocking the side walk.
It’s all in a day’s work for the Queen’s Qustodian, Jeff’s street superhero alterego. And he thinks you should do it, too.
