Melody Simpson sits in her New Jersey home wishing for her son Reuben to return home. It’s almost thanksgiving and at times like this she feels his absence even more. Reuben was deported to Jamaica six years ago after being caught with crack cocaine by an undercover cop. He would serve a two year jail sentence but what would come as a surprise would be his deportation. Reuben Simpson was born on a U.S. military base in Germany while his father served there. Unknown to his parents, who were green card holders at the time, Reuben would not be considered an American citizen. After living in the United States for most his life he would be deported to Jamaica, the land of his parents’ birth but a place he had never even step foot on.
I first heard about this family through a friend and I just had to investigate.
