I chose this piece for two reasons. First, was the sheer honesty of the piece. It starts slow, and doesn’t give you a lot to grasp on to at first. But soon you start getting these moments and begin to see who these people are, and you really want to see inside their world. And i think it was a very wise choice to wait until the end to say what their conditions were, and offer the heartening statistic that people with downs syndroms have a shorter life expectancy. It kind of hits you hard at the end because you just saw this ‘happily ever after’ story.
Second, i think this was actually really tricky to shoot, just because they’re not really doing very “exciting” stuff. But just the angles, and the simple moments captured end up being really powerful.
