Dai Sugano and the San Jose Mercury News have already won an Emmy Award for their brilliant multimedia work on UpRooted.

Their newest piece, Torn Apart, is a powerful, emotional multimedia story about a family of mixed status where the Dad has been deported and the Mom is about to be, potentially leaving the six children, all US Citizens under the age of 18, to fend for themselves.

There’s a wonderful behind-the-scenes story about the making of Torn Apart in Photo District News,  One Families Immigration Ordeal, about how Dai Sugano and the Merc reported and created this piece, how they found their subject and gained their trust.

If you’re interested in doing in-depth work that shines online, watch the piece then check out the “how they did it” story.
